Public defender says office can't represent man held in slaying of Yolo deputy

In a surprise move, Yolo County Public Defender Barry Melton said Tuesday his office has a conflict of interest in the case of a man accused of murdering Deputy Sheriff Jose Antonio Diaz last month and can no longer represent him. Marco Antonio Topete, 35, attends a court hearing last month in Woodland. At right is his lawyer, Assistant Public Defender Dean Johansson. Topete is charged in the death of a sheriff's deputy.
