IT WAS sealed with an embrace. Barack Obama concluded a wide-ranging address before the Turkish parliament on Monday April 6th by kissing the prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the cheeks. That appeared to please the parliamentarians, as did the American president’s pledge that his country was “not at war with Islam”. He pointed out that that many Americans have lived in countries where Muslims are in the majority and that others are themselves part of Muslim families. “I know, because I am one of them” he said, prompting wild applause.
