It was an astonishing victory for Barack Obama, and a truly historic victory for America.
To quote Neil Armstrong when he placed his foot upon the moon: "It's one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind."
American history is inextricably intertwined with the ugly history of racism. But Barack Obama went to one of the whitest states in America and won the votes not only of Democrats - who painfully overcame racism in the 1960's - but Republicans too, despite leaders who cynically embraced racism after Democrats transcended it.
