As well as the traditional skills of lock picking, lock fitting, key cutting, rekeying, and safe opening, locksmith training now includes more recent technologies - electromagnetic lock systems, digital locks and combinations, and computerized security systems. Much of the background knowledge required for these new technologies can only be taught in a formal course setting (rather than on the job), and there is a definite trend toward credentialing and licensing for locksmiths, so locksmith schools are more and more in demand.
