Talking travel with the CEO of Kayak.com

Talking travel with the CEO of Kayak.com

Filed under: Talking TravelKayak is one of our favorite companies to write about. The leading airfare metacrawler processes some 40 million travel requests per month, making it one of the most popular travel sites out there. TIME Magazine has called it one of the "50 Coolest Websites" and the "Best Search Aid" by Travel + Leisure Magazine. Instead of random musings this time, we've got Steve Hafner on the line. He's the co-founder and CEO, a guy who's more than qualified in his position--he help...

Visualizing Climate Data in Phase Space

Visualizing Climate Data in Phase Space

I've been reading the online draft (pdf) of Ray Pierrehumbert's excellent new book on climate science, Principles of Planetary Climate. On page 54, there's a nice graph of ocean 18O isotope levels over the past four million years. Using this data, we can infer how much of the planet's water was bound up in ice, as a function of time. The graph reminds me of the kind of trace you get from a nonlinear system that's in a chaotic state, so it seems like a neat idea to visualize this data in phase sp...

With the Secure Sight digital door viewer you'll never have to guess who's coming to dinner

With the Secure Sight digital door viewer you'll never have to guess who's coming to dinner

Peepholes are all very well, but you actually have to leave your chair to find out who's calling, and that's never good. Thankfully, there's now a more high-tech option for the sedentary (or peephole-lacking) among us. The Secure Sight records all your visitors, whether you're in or out, so you can see who's calling right now as well as who came by when you were at the market. (Better than TV!) You fit the camera to your door and put the viewer wherever is convenient. Personally, I'd also put a...

No Trigger announce new album, show at Fest 7, members playing with Set Your Goals

No Trigger announce new album, show at Fest 7, members playing with Set Your Goals

No Trigger frontman Tom Rheault dropped us a line denying recent break-up rumors, and to provide some updates on the band's recent happenings. Included are an upcoming set at this year's The Fest 7, a new record, and two band members currently playing with fellow melodic hardcore brethren Set Your Goals. Here's what Tom had to say: So it dawned on me that there has not been any official updates from No Trigger Land recently, and today seemed like the perfect day to fill in the gaps. Today is spe...

McCain and his Doc Brown DeLorean

McCain and his Doc Brown DeLorean

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing click to enlarge I hate to keep on McCain and his intellectual gaffes, but the latest about the surge and the Awakening, brings up another thought. Even if McCain tells us he will pick good advisers, but if he can't keep his facts straight and if he can't use a computer, how in the world is he going to whip up the brainpower to pick knowledgeable advisers? We have gone long enough with a great lack of intelligence in all facets of ...

The best movie of all time? Who wants to know?

The "best movie of all time"? Who wants to know?

Yesterday morning I went to a memorial service in Mt. Auburn cemetery for the sister of a family friend. Afterwards, as the group milled around drinking iced tea and eating finger food under a small tent next to the chapel, word got out among the teenagers and college kids that there was a movie critic present. One by one, they came up to me and asked the same question, with almost the same wording. Is "The Dark Knight" the best movie of all time? I cracked wise in most cases, saying, no, it's ...

Just a dollar down and a dollar a week Woody Guthrie

Click images for desktop size: "Untitled" by Clyde Cadwell I'm used to change. Throughout the 70's and 80's after a surf session, to start a long night, to remember the game we'd just played, just because the weather was nice and the top was down, we used to go to Delores. Not the one in Santa Monica adjacent . . . the one on Wilshire, just west of LaCienega. We always went there for Suzy-Q fries with Delores Sauce and a Cherry Lime Rickey. Delores had car hops. You used to honk your horn when y...
