Visualizing Climate Data in Phase Space

I've been reading the online draft (pdf) of Ray Pierrehumbert's excellent new book on climate science, Principles of Planetary Climate. On page 54, there's a nice graph of ocean 18O isotope levels over the past four million years. Using this data, we can infer how much of the planet's water was bound up in ice, as a function of time. The graph reminds me of the kind of trace you get from a nonlinear system that's in a chaotic state, so it seems like a neat idea to visualize this data in phase sp...

Violinist.com interview with Rachel Barton Pine

Violinist.com interview with Rachel Barton Pine

By Laurie Niles: After meeting Rachel Barton Pine and talking with her about her life and her projects, just one word comes to my mind to describe one of our most beloved members of this site: Tireless. This is a woman who practiced every single day, from her first violin lesson age age three until she was 13 -- even if it was Christmas or her birthday or she had the flu. As a teenager, she was practicing up to eight hours a day, learning the solo repertoire at a voracious pace and also playing ...

Steve Fossett: Gone but not forgotten, unfortunately

Steve Fossett: Gone but not forgotten, unfortunately

I don’t mean to be cruel, but Steve Fossett is becoming a lot more interesting in death than he was in life. I’ve always had a hard time getting excited about Fossett. No doubt he was a fine man who is deeply missed by his family and friends. I just couldn’t figure out why I knew who he was, or why his life attracted more media attention than, say, Joey Chestnut, the U.S. hot dog eating champion, who held on to his title on July 4 with a spirited defence against arch-rival Takeru Kobayashi...

20 questions for … Indigo Girl Amy Ray

Amy Ray talks the talk - her lyrics fearlessly nail issues of violence, environmental issues and other pressing topics; her Indigo Girls concerts often serve as fundraisers for various deserving organizations. And she walks the walk as a human rights activist on many fronts, including co-founder of the human rights / environmental organization, Honor the Earth. While on a flight from New York to her hometown in Georgia, she penned these sometimes poignant, sometimes playful responses to "PopMatt...
