756: It hasn't been the same in the year since Bonds hit historic home run

SAN FRANCISCO – One year ago today, history – tainted or not – was made at AT&T Park. At 8:51 p.m., Barry Bonds hit the 756th home run of his career to supplant Hank Aaron as Major League Baseball's all-time home run king and become the third record holder in 86 years. Barry Bonds was on top of the world a year ago after becoming Major League Baseball's all-time home run leader. A year later, he can't even get a minimum-salary offer.

The absence of the Consob and the Bank of Italy

The absence of the Consob and the Bank of Italy

Where were the Consob and the Bank of Italy when the financial scandals were happening? They haven’t convinced us that they didn’t know anything, but we are convinced that there were conniving even if there was no complicity. We of Italia dei Valori have prepared a package of laws that relates to savings and credit and aims to find the funds to relaunch the economy of the country. But instead of taking from the weak to give to the strong, it takes from the crafty ones to give to all the cit...

10 signs the stock market may have bottomed

(Photo: Toru Hanai/Reuters) The following is a condensation of an analysis issued earlier this week by McLean and Partners of Calgary. It doesn’t necessarily reflect my own view of where the market has going. Personally, I have no strong opinion on the probable short term move of stocks, or interest rates, or commodities or particular economic or geographical sectors. Certainly there are any number of gloomier prognostications floating around, from John Mauldin to Richard Russell to Peter Gra...

Typo? City/state letter on tax-exempt bonds backdates MTA RFP by three years

Typo? City/state letter on tax-exempt bonds backdates MTA RFP by three years

Atlantic Yards Report Maybe it's just a typo. Maybe it's a calculated slip. But there's another misleading element in a letter that, as I and Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn have contended, deserves serious scrutiny. The 5/8/08 letter to the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Treasury Department from the New York City Industrial Development Authority and the Empire State Development Corporation backdates the issuance of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's request for proposals (RFP) for th...

Weak economic data boost bond prices

Treasury prices were higher Thursday on worse-than-expected unemployment claims data and existing home sales, indicating that the economy is still under pressure and providing motivation for investors to seek the safety of longer-term government bonds.

Time to scrap minimum annual RRIF withdrawal rates

Time to scrap minimum annual RRIF withdrawal rates

William Robson, of C.D. Howe Institute. Kaz Ehara for the National Post The C.D. Howe Institute argues it's time to lower minimum withdrawal rates from Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs) or even abolish mandated annual withdrawals altogether. An e-brief written by the institute's William Robson says current federal policy forces seniors to make minimum withdrawals from their RRIFs "whether or not they make financial sense." This is because circumstances have changed dramatically since 19...

Matsui surgery could lead Yanks to consider Bonds

Matsui surgery could lead Yanks to consider Bonds

Hideki Matsui's left knee swelled, increasing the possibility he will need season-ending surgery and perhaps giving the New York Yankees reason to contemplate signing Barry Bonds. In this Sept. 26, 2007 file photo, San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds waves his final goodbye as a Giant, as he leaves the baseball game at the end of the sixth inning against the San Diego Padres in San Francisco. Bonds has not received a single offer to return to Major League baseball, his agent Jeff Borris said Monda...
