Google pushing software to low-cost Linux PCs

With an eye for larger adoption of Linux, Google is actively working with open-source developers to integrate its applications in the OS, a Linux developer said on Tuesday. By working with developers, Google may be trying to push more of its applications in netbooks, low-cost laptops designed to run basic applications for Web surfing and e-mail, said David Liu, Good OS Founder and President, at the Linuxworld conference in San Francisco. A stickies situation

A stickies situation

An early virtual desktop program for the Mac, the aptly named Spaces.app, by Riley Lynch, circa January 2001. Hmm, I wonder where Apple gets all of its great ideas ... I'm stuck on my Mac's Stickies program. I've got 13 stickies lined up on the right side of my desktop, most of them collapsed. The topmost note is pink -- to suggest urgency -- and lists the must-do items for the day (including this post). Most of the others are collapsed and lined up in a neat stack, any one of them ready to unf...

Notes from GUADEC Istanbul

Notes from GUADEC Istanbul

GUADEC is held in Istanbul this year, and as has been the custom in 2006 and 2007, I again came there to discuss making the Linux desktop location aware. This year I gave the "GeoClue and Gypsy - geo-information frameworks for mobile Linux desktops" talk together with Jussi Kukkonen and Iain Holmes. With Linux devices hitting more and more pockets time was finally ripe for the talk, and hopefully soon we shall see GeoClue in places like the GNOME Panel Clock and Telepathy. Slides are available ...

How tech wars end

How tech wars end

The tech industry is organized around the concept of wars. In recent memory, the browser wars, the Java wars, before that there were wars over email APIs, desktops, GUIs, networking standards, you name it, if there's money to be made in controlling users, there's been a war to lock those users in. It's been that way since the dawn of time, and it will always be that way. It's in human nature. It's also in human nature for the users to realize they're being used, get fed up, and create or discove...
