My Blog Leaderboard ? It?s All About the Sharers

Over the weekend, Louis Gray posted on his blog “Roll Your Own Blog Leaderboard With Google Reader Trends.” After seeing his article, of course I had to look at My Google Reader trends, too. A couple of things immediately jumped out at me. One, I’m guilty of self-promotion and My Google Reader trends certainly [...]

Spreed makes reading RSS feeds faster, stressful

Spreed makes reading RSS feeds faster, stressful

Web-based RSS feed aggregator Spreed is casual reading's worst enemy. A speed-reader extraordinaire like Robert Scoble might enjoy it as a way to dig through even more stories a day, but at its heart it's kind of like visiting an aquarium with one of those moving sidewalks; you're still seeing what you came there to see--you just don't have the luxury of taking your time. Time is actually the key focus of Spreed. It centers on a speed-reading player that will only show you three or four words o...

Brand New Beijing Olympics Satellite Imagery in Google Earth

Brand New Beijing Olympics Satellite Imagery in Google Earth

Google has quietly slipped in brand new satellite imagery taken by Geoeye which was taken on July 19th, 2008 showing the Beijing Olympics venues. I've been expecting Google to do some new imagery in anticipation for the Olympics - just like they did for the Torino Olympics two years ago. A GEB reader let me know the imagery had been updated within the last day (Thanks Stephen!). Keep a close watch on the area. I wouldn't be surprised if more 3D models of the new facilities and other photos start...

Google Pagerank Update - Does Pagerank Accurately Judge Website Popularity?

Google Pagerank Update - Does Pagerank Accurately Judge Website Popularity?

As many of you have probably heard by this point in time, the Q2 2008 Google Pagerank update has just concluded. Every few months, Google re-evaluates every website on the internet and places rankings on some of the best sites available. This ranking metric is very important for blogs for many reasons, including reader participation, [...] ShareThis

Knol and void: The day I became a published Google 'expert'

Knol and void: The day I became a published Google 'expert'

I'm an expert on pit bulls! Really. I just wrote a knol, a Web article akin to an encyclopedia entry, using Google's new Knol publishing platform launched publicly on Wednesday. With Knol, Google is encouraging people to create more authoritative content that can be indexed by its search engine and monetized with ads. Unlike blogs, which tend to be casual and opinionated in tone, knols are supposed to be fact-based, informative, and well-sourced articles on a specific subject. The author's knol...

How to Scoop Fortune at its own Conference ... and Other Notes from Brainstorm

How to Scoop Fortune at its own Conference ... and Other Notes from Brainstorm

I popped over to the start of Fortune's Brainstorm conference primarily because they said Sir Martin Sorrell, who I consider to be one of the world's savviest media executives along with Rupert Murdoch, would be there. Unfortunately, Sir Martin couldn't make it because he is engaged in a multi-billion acquisition. Too bad, this is someone worth watching. Check out Reuter's Eric Auchard's interview with Sir Martin. I love the end part when Sir Martin tells Eric "good luck with your merger." He w...

Google Integrates Services Into the New iGoogle

Google Integrates Services Into the New iGoogle

Users love it when products and services from one company are nicely integrated with one another. It helps to keep users from bouncing around services. Companies love it because it's a way to lock users in, while gaining their trust. Nevertheless, Google has me hooked on yet another product from their labs: iGoogle. While I may be late to joining the RSS dashboard game, here's a look at a few of iGoogle's new features that users will enjoy. Gmail Integration If you're using the Gmail widget in ...
