Google Knol: A Unit of Good or Evil?

Google Knol: A Unit of Good or Evil?

image credit: techrepublic It has been about a week since the launch of Google Knol, a user-generated knowledge-base project that some have referred to as a Wikipedia-killer, while others put it more in the boat with a Squidoo or Mahalo. Since then, there has been a great amount of press around whether or not Google is making dangerous steps into the content business. People in the web industry are growing increasingly uncomfortable with the way recent Google launches (Knol)...

When the 'wisdom of crowds' turns on itself: IMDB edition

When the 'wisdom of crowds' turns on itself: IMDB edition

The concept of the "wisdom of crowds" is a fundamental building block of a lot of the Web 2.0 services that we see today. While not all of them are built on this core concept, major sites like Digg, Wikipedia, and Mahalo rely heavily on crowds being wise. There have been several instances of this system breaking down in the past, one notable occurrence being the infamous Digg HD-DVD revolt. On occasions like this, a mob mentality tends to take over a very vocal and active segment of a community,...

Crowdsourced Encyclopedias: Wikipedia, Mahalo and Google Knol

Crowdsourced Encyclopedias: Wikipedia, Mahalo and Google Knol

Earlier today Google announced that Google Knol is now open to the public. Danny Sullivan has an awesome overview of how Google Knol works. I thought this would be a good time to compare three crowdsourced encyclopedias: Mahalo, Google Knol and Wikipedia. Each one takes a different angle on why you should contribute. Do you participate in any of these crowdsourced encyclopedias? If so, what factors helped make your decision? Was it to help the "greater good" or was it a financial decision? Here...

It’s a blast from the past! Revived from the Aloha’s best-selling line from the 1980s, the Mahalo 24 Pontoon Boat is all-new for 2009. Built with all the same materials and construction as the company’s more expensive models, the Mahalo 24 doesn’t include the pricey do-dads you may not need. This well-priced Aloha pontoon boat does have all the things you do need to make every excursion on the water a great one – full furniture, a large bimini top and an innovative dinette table with ...

Tech That: Mahalo Says Thanks!

Tech That: Mahalo Says Thanks!

Mahalo, the world's first human-powered search engine, is actually probably powered by hydroelectric power, but humans do "find and organize the best links" for their search results. With lots of possible searches, Mahalo depends on lots of humans to create those results, including Part Time Guides, Mahalo Mentors, and Full Time Guides. One way to motivate these folks and bind the Mahalo community together is through promos. They even made a special page on their web site, Show Us Your Mahalo, w...

You know how interested I usually am in 'new' ideas. Here's something cool. It's a new search engine called The Mahalo Greenhouse Project and presumably it's aim is to give more accurate and meaningful search results by delivering links that...

New Mahalo features: anyone can edit (even if not logged in) and anyone can create a new page (easily)

Two very important features were launched on Mahalo today: Anyone can edit any page on Mahalo even if they are not logged in. This means if you don't feel like logging in, but you want to add a fast fact to a page, or correct an error, you can do so quickly and easily. Of course, we check ever edit made in the system to make sure it is correct (i.e. Mahalo is Wikipedia with paid Fact Checkers). Anyone can easily create a new page in Mahalo. If you see a red link on a Mahalo page that means we ne...
