Legacy Family Tree update available (7.0.0.55)

Just before we left on our Legacy Genealogy Cruise, we issued an update for Legacy. After recovering from the great time we had, we're now able to write a little about what's new in this update. Version 7.0.0.55 adds some...

Today's Etsy Finds were curated by Jennifer of the thepaintedlily. Visit her wonderful Etsy shop, or just check out what she found below! love to read. Mystery, romance, classics—anything. What's better than sitting in a comfy lawn chair in the backyard, the warm breeze on your skin, a cool glass of lemonade (with a sprig of mint, please) and a great book? Violinist.com interview with Rachel Barton Pine

Violinist.com interview with Rachel Barton Pine

By Laurie Niles: After meeting Rachel Barton Pine and talking with her about her life and her projects, just one word comes to my mind to describe one of our most beloved members of this site: Tireless. This is a woman who practiced every single day, from her first violin lesson age age three until she was 13 -- even if it was Christmas or her birthday or she had the flu. As a teenager, she was practicing up to eight hours a day, learning the solo repertoire at a voracious pace and also playing ...

mom, if you were in a german Scheiße video

7/29/08 Since I'm in the mindset of communal theater and all its possible glory, let me offer up My Top 5 Movie Theater Experiences: 1. Pulp Fiction – October 1994, Varsity Theatre, Chapel Hill, NC Obviously, it's easy to make fun of Tarantino now, but in the mid-'90s, fresh off "Reservoir Dogs", my friends were psyched beyond psyched to see this. The Varsity, then run by Jim Steele, had olive-oil-popped popcorn and real butter, and was one of the few establishments that seemed to harken back ...

All the Stuff That Didn't Get Printed

Due to space issues in the print edition of The Courant, the last part of this past week's column (dated 7/24) did not get printed. Here it is. Tuesday The final event of the CFA "Days" series at Wesleyan is the talk by David Amram taking place at 12:10 p.m. in Crowell Concert Hall. Over the course of 5 decades, Amram, who is not only a brilliant composer but also a noted conductor and performer, has written operas, religious oratorios, movie scores, chamber works, concertos, and several books. ...

Sharing some projects

These last two days I have been hit with a cold or an asthma flare. I am not sure which and it has the same effect. I have to stay inside out of the heat and humidity. I live in the middle of the prairies that are normally known for being dry, but when I dared to step outside yesterday for a quick trip to the store, it was like stepping into a sauna. Ugh! If my lungs would actually function properly, this would be a great time for taking the girls to the spray park or setting up the sprinkler in...

The Roof and the Root

The Roof and the Root

Why There were two reasons that I was in Africa. The first one was that the mountain is there. I contend that every good journey involves a mountain high enough that it keeps a piece of you with it after you think you've gotten off. On top of the mountain is a doomed glacier of storied beauty that I needed to see before it melted into just a "once upon a time" memory described in a book or by an old man. The second reason I had long desired to come here was that my mother was born in East Africa...

Family Tree

Family Tree

There are plenty of family tree posters and books available out there, but this one, from Famille Summer Belle is one of the prettiest I've seen. My only quibble is that it doesn't show the links between the family members, as is surely the point of these things. If you can let that go, it can be enjoyed as a purely whimsical display, playing on the theme of the family tree. It's available in blue, as shown, and also in pink.

Video Game Controller Family Tree

Sock Master did some outstanding work tracing the lineage of video game controllers from 1977 to now without missing any of the weirdness in between.
