RANT: If You Want Good Italian Food in Hollywood...

Don't go to Miceli's on Las Palmas! *This is old, I just edited it and now it popped up to the top of my posts, so maybe Miceli's has improved since this experience. I wanted my daughter's birthday dinner to...

Lazy Sausage Meatballs with Eggplant

Lazy Sausage Meatballs with Eggplant

I'm still getting over the cold, or whatever I have, so I'm still doing lazy dishes. Thankfully, I had half a box of sausages in the fridge left-over, since it was a BJ's box of meat, exactly 1 pound 13 ounces, so that's what's in the recipe. Don't be alarmed by large amount of food this makes. It's the perfect thing to have left-over, easily re-heatable in the microwave, or easily packed as a lunch. Lazy Sausage Meatballs ~roughly 10 servings 1 recipe tomato sauce 1 medium eggplant, cut in smal...

Italians dial up best food price

Italians dial up best food price

A text messaging service set up by the Italian government is helping its citizens to haggle on their high street. The BBC reports. "... If Italians feel that their local food retailer is charging unreasonable prices, they can now call on a new service to help them haggle or walk away. Thanks to a text messaging system set up jointly by the Italian agriculture ministry and consumer associations, shoppers can check the average price of different foods in northern, central and southern Italy. The ...

La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matelica, 2006, Marche, Italy

La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matelica, 2006, Marche, Italy

A wine for a damn-decent-if-I-may-say-so seafood risotto. Waitrose have this new(ish) deli range; one item of which is a tub of mixed seafood in a herbed olive oil. Rather tasty I must say. Mixed in with a decently flavoured risotto it makes for a superb meal. An Italian wine to accompany, obviously, and you can't go wrong with this bottle also available from Waitrose. Review0.3 Wine Tasting Note: La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matelica, 2006, Marche, Italy. Stockist: Waitrose Price: £7.99 [More: ...

Four new vegetarian restaurants

Four new vegetarian restaurants

Four new vegetarian restaurants have recently opened in Toronto, two have extended their hours, and three are closing or are in transition. The Annex HodgePodge (258 Dupont St., e. of Spadina, 416-513-1333) is a brand new all-vegetarian, mostly-vegan cafe. They serve shepherd's pie, squash and spinach pie, veggie burgers, tofu n' brown rice, vegan rotis or wraps, house salad, fresh squeezed juice, smoothies and organic desserts. This tiny space with four counter seats is the former location of L...

Recipe: Cauliflower and Red Onions

What's Your Favorite Summer Foods?

What's Your Favorite Summer Foods?

I dunno bout you but during the searing hot days of summer, my appetite changes. I can't eat seem to eat as much. I crave sugar more and hot certain food just isn't that enticing to me. I'll take a cool, refreshing salad on a hot summer day over a piping hot plate of pasta. Instead, the dog days of summer have me craving what I consider summer food like: corn on the cob, watermelon, fresh cherries, and Italian Ice (see above). I try not to use our oven or stove top all that much when it reaches...

It's a market. No, it's a restaurant. No...

The market/restaurant concept is starting to catch on in Boston. The idea -- a restaurant sharing space with a specialty market where one can buy the types of ingredients featured in the food -- has always appealed to me. I fell for it a few years ago in Paris (of course) at a little place called Les Papilles (below). I ate a wonderful lunch, then bought some wine and pate for an evening picnic, as well as some jam to bring home. The chef is a huge rugby fan -- he's from Toulouse, where love of ...
