Home Fried Potatoes and a Cousins' Brunch

My cousins came for brunch today and I asked Lon to make (and write the recipe) for Home Fried Potatoes. My only requirement was that I wanted him to use tomato paste. We agreed that it was a nice touch, adding both flavor and color to the dish. It turned out pretty spicy too but everyone loved it. Home Fried Potatoes ~about 6 servings (side dish) 4 cups of peeled and cubed (3/4") Idaho potatoes, roughly 3 medium-to-large Idaho potatoes 2 cups diced (1") red and/or green bell peppers 1 1/2 cups ...

Lazy Sausage Meatballs with Eggplant

Lazy Sausage Meatballs with Eggplant

I'm still getting over the cold, or whatever I have, so I'm still doing lazy dishes. Thankfully, I had half a box of sausages in the fridge left-over, since it was a BJ's box of meat, exactly 1 pound 13 ounces, so that's what's in the recipe. Don't be alarmed by large amount of food this makes. It's the perfect thing to have left-over, easily re-heatable in the microwave, or easily packed as a lunch. Lazy Sausage Meatballs ~roughly 10 servings 1 recipe tomato sauce 1 medium eggplant, cut in smal...

Sausage, Peppers, and Onions

Sausage, Peppers, and Onions

I almost didn't write this post because making Sausage, Peppers, and Onions is so little work, I don't even consider it cooking. Then, it occurred to me that this could really benefit some busy moms out there. As I prepared this meal, while not feeling so well today, I reminisced about how my mom always managed to put a balanced meal on the table, even when she had a fever. (My dad was so clueless in the kitchen. He can barely use the microwave correctly.) Sausage, Peppers, and onions, was one o...

Swiss Meat Pie for Swiss National Day

Swiss Meat Pie for Swiss National Day

What Swiss speciality should I prepare for my own Red, White or Swiss Event? That was the question I was asking me during the last few days. Cervelat and Bürli were one of the first things I was missing here in Spain. In the meantime I can bake Bürli by myself and a sort of Cervelat can be bought in a nearby supermarket. So I decided to make a Swiss Meat Pie. For the background Y. had to borrow me his t-shirt. ;-) Okay pies are not typical Swiss, but I gave it the Swiss touch with the Cervelat...

Local Loving: Rosamunde's Sausages

Local Loving: Rosamunde's Sausages

Anytime I end up drinking in San Francisco's lower Haight district, I have to make a pit stop at Rosamunde Sausage Grill. The hole in the wall joint is perfect for a meal on the go or for grabbing a sausage to enjoy at a nearby bar. One yells his/her sausage of choice — beer, Italian, smoked haberno tequila chicken, lamb, etc. — over the crowd. After a seven-minute wait, another quick decision for toppings (onions, kraut, grilled hot or sweet peppers, ketchup, mustard) is made before being m...

Values, taste perception and psychological blind spots

Values, taste perception and psychological blind spots

An ingenious study just published in the Journal of Consumer Research has provided a striking demonstration that taste perceptions and product preferences are strongly influenced by our personal values - to the point where people who believe in the importance of social authority perceived a sausage roll labelled as vegetarian as far inferior to a 'meat' version, even though they ate the same sausage roll on both occasions. The same result appeared whether the participants actually ate meat or ve...

Willunga Creek Black Duck Cabernet-Merlot, 2005, McLaren Vale, Australia

No great wine and food match today - although if you must know it was some locally made fried sausages with mash potato laced with creme fraiche, basil and garlic - all that was required from the wine was a full and rich little number to relax in front of the telly with... The chemical industry's war on California toxics reform

The chemical industry's war on California toxics reform

Raise your hand if you want your food packaging – hamburger wrappers, french-fry bags, pizza boxes – coated with cancer-causing Teflon chemicals that pollute the bodies of unborn babies and Arctic polar bears. How about baby bottles and sippy cups made with hormone-disrupting chemicals that are about to be banned in Canada and Wal-Mart and Target have pulled off the shelf? I didn't think so. But the chemical industry is waging a take-no-prisoners war in California to stop the state from bann...

The Eat + Drink List: This week's top 7

The lunch-only Harvest Menu may well be your best way to sample Mark Sullivan’s inspired seasonal food. While away the afternoon over a meal of braised spring onions, pancetta-wrapped day-boat scallops and panna cotta with blueberries; depending on your post-lunch commitments, you might consider the (optional) wine pairing. photo by Joe Budd 2.
